Airtight Block Walls

Impossible? Difficult? No - Very easy!

Concrete block walls can leak air into and out of a building at up to 80 cubic metres an hour per square metre of surface. Concrete block walls treated with Elite Airtight are completely airtight.

Imagine the Savings!

Elite Airtight provides a cure for the airtightness problems associated with blockwork and allows architects to design cost effective warehouses, distribution centres, schools, sports halls and other large buildings incorporating inexpensive blockwork (where appropriate), while still meeting Part L of the Building Regulations.

This unique, specialist coating reduces airflow through the walls to a rate "too low to detect" and offers benefits which can normally only be attained by expensive and time-consuming plastering procedures.

Elite Airtight can be applied quickly and economically, making it the prefered choice of painters and decorators who have been struggling with the time and expense involved in applying numerous coats of non specialist paints in an attempt to achieve a reasonable finish.

Applying Elite Airtight over large expanses of concrete block ensures considerable savings in the heating and cooling of industrial and commercial interiors.

Specifying Elite Airtight at the planning stage allows standard economical blockwork to be used in the construction of a building but with the added benefit of an airtight, hard wearing, washable and decorative finish.

Also ideal for use in existing properties on brick and block, providing an economical yet significant improvement in the airtightness of the building.

Technical Data

SubstratesBlock walls, brick, concrete, aerated concrete
ColourWhite but can be tinted
CoverageTo an airtight finish - 1.5m2 per litre (see Method of Application)
ApplicationAirless spray recommended, with back-rolling (see Method of Application)
Touch Dry15 minutes, drying time 2 hours, recoat after 4 hours

The alternatives

  • Plastering - Expensive, time-consuming, messy, requires painting
  • Plaster board - Expensive, time-consuming, not airtight, requires painting
  • Parge Coat - Poor quality surface, not washable
  • Paint - Not airtight unless many coats are applied, unattractive finish
  • Bare block - Not airtight, poor quality surface, unattractive finish, poor light reflectance

Elite Airtight is ...

  • Self priming
  • Excellent adhesion
  • Vapour permeable
  • Washable
  • No residual odour
  • Water based

Elite Airtight is an inexpensive, smart investment which reduces heating and cooling costs in any building with exposed internal concrete blocks, whether previously painted or bare.

The test was carried in accordance with BS EN 12114:2000 Thermal performance of buildings - Air permeability of building components and building elements

Elite Airtight was tested on standard hollow concrete blocks which allowed air at 80m3/hr/m2 to pass through before application of the coating and "too low to detect" after application.

Method of Application

Spray one coat. Back-roller this coat to cover any visible voids. Apply mist-coat to finish. The coverage, overall and to an airtight finish, is approximately 1.5m2 per litre.

Airless spray recommended with a 21-thou tip and 12" fan

Alternative Application Methods

Standard brush and rolling techniques can be used as an alternative to spraying. Due to the high solid content of the basecoat more materials will be used, the project will take longer to complete and the application will be more labour intensive.
